The life and death of Socrates
Week 4 - the ‘digression’

By portraying Athenian systems in a bad way, Socrates would have not received a positive
reaction from the Athenian juror
○ Both Plato and Socrates know what they are doing at this point
○ Plato deliberately constructs a picture of Socrates who is virtuously at odd with the rest of
the citizens

■ Socrates is determined to do the right thing , even if the cost of that is his life (
the first mention of what he is going to do is very generic)
● Encourages admiration of character because he is so brave and is doing
the right thing ( at least as far as we can gather from his projection of
himself)
■ How does he show that he is like Achilles?
● Socrates is introducing a further idea of when you stick to the right thing
you might have been commanded to do what is right
