LESSON PROGRESSION
Time

Motivation and Introduction:
Introduction:
-Welcome the students to a 6
week program of touch rugby
-Clarify what will be required
during the lesson and identify
what skills the students will
complete during class

students might have before the
lesson

touch rugby is and how it is
conducted as a sport within
Australia, identifying key
aspects of the sport

WARM UP: British Bulldogs

Evasive skills

1
...
The other students line up
along the start line of the
rectangular grid and on the
teacher’s whistle, have to run
through, trying to evade and out
run the taggers in the middle
3
...
The game continues until all
students have been captured

SKILL 1: Stuck in the Mud

Evasive Skills

Teacher Positioning

1
...
Using the grid that has been
set up, students are to spread
out through the rectangle, and
the teacher nominates 2
taggers to begin the game
3
...
If the students get tagged
they are to stand still, with a
ball above their head if they
have one
5
...
The game continues until all
students have been captured,
or the taggers don’t catch
everyone within the 5 minutes
7
...
30
pm

Roll Ball
-Students must roll the ball
through the legs of the team
mates which have been
captured
-Ideally you would place the
ball on the ground and get
the captured person to step
over the ball, just like in a
game and this would free
them again

-The teacher should be moving constantly
and talking to the students as they play
-Teacher can add more taggers if required
or balls to the students so they are able to
free more people, depending how the drill
is going

Equipment
2x coloured bibs
15x rugby balls
1x whistle for the teacher
8x cones

Passing

1x large grassed area/oval

-With the advancement of
the game, passes must be
made quick and fast
between each player to free
the captured ones
-Watching the ball closely
with soft hands is essential
so you don’t fumble or drop
the ball, as this would be a
turn over during a touch
rugby game

Bridging organization

-Students to bring in all the cones and place all the rugby balls back in the bag that the teacher is holding
onto
-Students should sit down at the allocated meeting point and are instructed on the next activity which is rob
the bank
-Teacher to explain the importance of passing and not dropping the ball within the game of touch rugby

2
...
Teacher is to allocate 4-5
equal teams amongst the class
that are going to be competing
against each other in this game

-Passing within this drill is
vital, as it has to be
accurate, fast and effective

-Teacher should be positioned on the
outside of the area where the students are
running in, and constantly moving around
the see if any students are taking more
balls than they should or picking up errors

-Students don’t have to put

HPE2203 Jan 2017

2
...
Students have to run, pick up
the ball, pass back to the player
waiting next in line at their
hoop, tag the next player, they
have to roll ball that ball and
then go and gain another to
add to the ‘bank’
4
...
Once all the balls have been
collected from the centre,
teams are now allowed to steal
balls from any team they like
6
...
Advancements of this game
can include tap and go with the
foot as the student collects the
ball, or if a student has a ball
and a person without the ball
tags them, then they have to
return that ball to where they
got it from

GAME: Guard the Castle

Offensive Strategies

Teacher Positioning

1
...
The game it set up so there
are 5 members of a team lined
up across a rectangular field
and the other team is at the
start line with a rugby ball each
3
...
If the student has been
tagged they have to go back to
the starting line, and the tagger
must go over to the side of the
rectangle, touch the cone, and
then come back into play
5
...
Once the game has been
completed, swap with another
team so you can verse other
students in the class

2
...
58
pm

-Teacher must watch to see if students
aren’t participating fairly, and penalise
the team if necessary

Evasive Skills
-Students must be agile and
quick to twist and turn, to try
and find an opening through
the defence and score a try

Equipment
-16x cones
-15x rugby balls
-15x coloured bibs

Scoring a try

-1x whistle for the teacher

-Once the students have got
through the defenders in the
middle, they must place the
ball over the try line, with one
or two hands touching the ball

-1x large grassed area/oval

-It is important that when
placing the ball you don’t drop
it, as this is classified as a
knock on and turn over

Bridging organization
-Students are to gether all the equipment used within the final game and bring it in to the meeting point
-Annouce the winning team within the competition
-Get all the students to be sitting down for the conclusion of the lesson

Conclusion:
-Clarify and restate the skills
HPE2203 Jan 2017

that were completed within the
lesson, asking students to
demonstrate key teaching
points
-Ask the students what they
learnt within the game of touch
rugby
-Share a good, encouraging
moment with the class and
share an area to improve on

Lesson Closure: (Review lesson objectives with students)
-Review and clarify the key teaching points used within the lesson
-Identify the areas of improvement and highlight the areas of success in the students
-Ask the students what they liked about the lesson
-Reinform the skill of passing and how it must go backwards, as this is a major skill through the game
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
-Identify and observe the skill level of the students
-Match up activities that are suited for the skill level
-Have a plan and implement teaching strategies that will help improve the students’ skills within the
activities

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
