Touch Rugby
LESSON ORGANISATION (based on Australian Curriculum: Health & Physical Education)

Students’ Prior Knowledge:
-This is week one within the 6 week program, so the
students aren’t going to be very familiar with the sport
Learning Area: Health & Physical Education
-Students should understand that touch rugby is a sport
that involves quick, fast and explosive movement
-Students should know that it’s not tackle and only a touch
is made, which is the equivalent to a tackle in normal
rugby

Practise specialised movement skills and apply them in
different movement situations (ACPMP061)

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation:
-Teacher to organise and look up whether the drills and
skills being taught are at an adequate level for the
students, as well as the appropriate equipment ready to
be used for the lesson
-Take the roll and understand that some students might be
missing, so adjusting quickly to the number you have is
essential
-To cater for the high achieving students the teacher is to
ensure there are extension activities for the students on
each drill so they can enhance their performance
- To cater for the struggling students provide extra help
within the drills and make sure their technique is right
before they go onto the next compartment of the skill

passed backwards

Roll Ball
-Students must roll the ball
through the legs of the team
mates which have been
captured
-Ideally you would place the
ball on the ground and get
the captured person to step
over the ball, just like in a
game and this would free
them again
-The teacher should be moving constantly
and talking to the students as they play
-Teacher can add more taggers if required
or balls to the students so they are able to
free more people, depending how the drill
is going

Passing
1x large grassed area/oval
-With the advancement of
the game, passes must be
made quick and fast
between each player to free
the captured ones
-Watching the ball closely
with soft hands is essential
so you don’t fumble or drop
the ball, as this would be a
turn over during a touch
rugby game
Bridging organization
-Students to bring in all the cones and place all the rugby balls back in the bag that the teacher is holding
onto
-Students should sit down at the allocated meeting point and are instructed on the next activity which is rob
the bank
-Teacher to explain the importance of passing and not dropping the ball within the game of touch rugby

-Passing within this drill is
vital, as it has to be
accurate, fast and effective
-Teacher should be positioned on the
outside of the area where the students are

middle, they must place the
ball over the try line, with one
or two hands touching the ball

-It is important that when
placing the ball you don’t drop
it, as this is classified as a
knock on and turn over

-Students are to gether all the equipment used within the final game and bring it in to the meeting point
-Annouce the winning team within the competition
-Get all the students to be sitting down for the conclusion of the lesson
