Warm Up: Ball Runner

Passing

Teacher Positioning

1
...
The rest of the class should
do the exact same thing so
the class is horizontally lined
up, going down the field

-Passing must be quick,
fast and straight, to put
each other under pressure
when the whistle is blown

3
...
When the whistle is blown,
the student with the ball needs
to run away from their partner
and score a try
5
...
The first person to 5 points
wins the game
7
...
13pm

Bridging organization

-Students are to take their cones, create groups of 3s, and set out their cones in a triangle formation
-Within each group there should be 1 ball between them to pass around in the triangle
-Students need to sit down once they are in their triangle and groups of 3
2
...
Students are to pass the
rugby ball around the triangle
focusing on opening the hips
and turning towards the target

-Students must focus on
stepping forward with
opposite leg to the
direction that they want to
throw

-Teacher to position themself in and
around the groups, watching and
observing the techniques on all of the
students completing the passes, roll balls
and touches off the foot

-Rugby ball must start at a
hip height and a twist in the
torso makes the body turn
and ball go sideways to the
target player

-Teacher must help any struggling
students and give them another
demonstration of how to complete these
skills

2
...
When the teacher blows the
whistle again students must
complete a roll ball, step over
and throw the designated
target, change direction after 1
minute

Equipment
Roll Ball

HPE2203 Jan 2017

4
...
Students are to increase
the speed if they are getting
used to the ball shape and
different types of combinations
whilst throwing

the next person in the
triangle
-In game a roll ball is done
quickly, so practicing this
quick movement will be
very beneficial

-1x Whistle for the teacher
-1x large grassed area/oval

Touch with foot
-Touch with the foot is
completed by placing the
ball on the ground after the
catch, touching it with the
toe of your foot, picking the
ball back up and throwing it
to the next person in the
triangle
-Also must be done quick
to catch the defence off
guard, which gets them
offside

Drill 2: 2 on 1 Keepy Off

Passing

Teacher Positioning

1
...
The attackers need to keep
the ball off the defender for as
long as possible through
constant movement and
creating space within the grid

-Constant movement is key
to create space for a lateral
pass that’s quick and can
then be passed back away
from the defender

3
...
This keeps occurring until 34 minutes is up and the
teacher gives a break and
explain what would make it
easier for the defender to
intercept the ball

carrier

Bridging organization

-Students are to join with another group and 3 to make a group of 6
-Collect all the cones and bring them into the meeting point, the groups should have 2 balls between the 3
of them
-Teacher to instruct what the next activity involves, which is a combination of all the skills learnt in a game
situation
2
...
Students to set up a
rectangular grid with cones so
there is a try line at each end
2
...
When the attackers are
ready, all 3 people run around
their respective end cone and
come running into the grid
4
...
Either a try is scored of the
defender tags a person with
the ball, and then the next
group of 3 have a go
6
...
Extension of this drill would
be make it a 3 vs 2, or give
the attacking team a tag so
they can reset and still try

Bridging organization
-Students to bring in all the equipment used within the games and place it neatly at the meeting point
-Teacher to get all students to sit down and listen to the instruction

Conclusion:
-Identify offensive and
defensive strategies that
worked
-Again test and demonstrate
key teaching points used
within the main skills of the
lesson
-Ask the students whether
they felt more comfortable
completing the skills than last
week
-Ask were the drills suitable
for their level or was it too
easy?

Lesson Closure: (Review lesson objectives with students)
-Refine and restate the strategies used within the last activity, as this was the first game scenario played
in class
-What was completed well within the lesson and what needs to be improved on
HPE2203 Jan 2017

-Go over what we are going to be doing next lesson to enhance the skills that we have learnt in the first 2
weeks, as there will be more game like drills

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
-Students need to practice their skills at home or with their friends to get better at the sport
-Get the students to look up some professional games of touch rugby and see what they do
-Find drills that will continue to develop the skills of the students

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
