‘It is through Dickens introduction of his characters that we are able to understand his
primary concerns’
Explore the ways that Dickens presents a minimum of two characters and uses them
to introduce his themes?
Dickens uses his characters to present some of the ongoing conflicts and issues in the
society
...
As well as each character having great significance there was often a
different character who differed entirely
...
Sissy
Jupe stands for rebellion, poverty and fancy where as Tom and Louisa stand for fact,
oppression and poverty although one more than the other
...
It could all relate to the bible reference ‘you reap what you sow’, which explains why sissy
juxtaposes to Tom and Louisa because something different was ‘sowed’ in her
...
Section one of the novel
was entitled ‘sowing’ and section 2 ‘reaping’
...
Flower symbolises something innocent and fragile, In william Blake’s “Ah Sunflower”
the sunflower represents people and could then be linked to sissy jupe, the idea that she
was bright and full of life and the result of a flower is often due to what is planted and how its
nurtured and taken care of

Whilst Sissy was a kind, tender and compassionate woman where as Louisa was quite cold,
distant and monotonous, although this was due to her upbringing and what had been planted
and enforced unto her from a young age, it meant she was unable to express her feelings
...
Mr Gradgrind also attempted
to plant his beliefs into Sissy’s head, even forcing her to change her name to Cecilia and
demeaning and mocking her father, but in the words of Mr gradgrind “Would you plant
something where it had no possibilities or growing?”, Sissy outrightly disregarded Mr
Gradgrind’s beliefs, speaking a man of a higher authority and a higher class, the epitome of
rebellion
...
This implies
that those who believed that money got them everything in live but lack the attributes that
makes them human, and although they believe they are more civilised and are better than
others, they are actually just restricted and lack something that had the ability to change their
lives and enable them to be more fulfilled more full of life rather than just being an empty
void of emotions
...
He is controlled by his
father and all that his father has planted in him
...
Dickens is trying to use his characters to say to people that no one deserves to be
oppressed and rebelling should only take place if you have the good of society at heart , that
although facts does play a huge part in our society, Individuality, creativity and imagination
should not be forced away in other to make room for it, that no matter your social
background it shouldn’t define who you are as a person, that one shouldn’t attempt to force
their idea of perfection on anyone else as it is very likely to end messily, that we should be
careful of what we plant into young minds, what is said to them and the manner in which we
bring them up
