Solving by substitution
method
Let's get started!
Substitution method
To solve systems of equations using
substitution, follow this procedure:
Step 1) Select one equation and solve it for
one of its variables
...
Step 3) Solve the new equation
...
Step 5) Check the solution in both original
equations
...
We select the second equation ----> x + y = 5
Now, we choose a variable, for example x, then:
x + y = 5 ----> x = 5 - y
Step 2) In the other equation, substitute for the variable just
solved
...
From the step 1)
x=5-y
Then, put y = 2 into
x=5-y
x =5-2
x=3
Step 5) Check the solution in both original equations
Putting x = 3 and y = 2 into
the first equation :
Putting x = 3 and y = 2 into the
second equation:
2x + 3y = 12
x+y=5
2(3) + 3(2) = 12
3+2=5
6 +6 = 12
5=5
12 = 12
The solutions x = 3,
y = 2 are correct!
Let's
practice!
