Characteristics of living organisms
In order for something to be considered living it must carry out all of the 7 life
processes:
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition
Movement: an action made by an organism causing a change of place/position
Respiration: a chemical reaction that takes place in cells to break down nutrients and
release energy
Sensitivity: the ability to detect and respond to changes in the environment
Growth: a permanent increase in size due to an increase in cell number, cell size or both
Reproduction: the process that makes more of the same kind of organism
Excretion: the removal of waste products, toxic material or substances that are in excess in
the body
Nutrition: the in-take of materials needed for energy, growth and repair
