Unit 27: Understanding health and safety in the business workplace
M1: Assess the implications of health, safety and security legislation and regulations for a
business role in a workplace environment
In this task, I am going to assess how different regulations will impact how people will act in
the workplace
...
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is a piece of legislation which details the duties of
employers regarding health and safety in the workplace
...
The Act enlists that the workplace have certain provisions to be upheld:
-
Safe operation to be upheld throughout which includes regular maintenance of the
workplace environment, equipment etc
-
Maintenance of safe access and exits, at the workplace, such as fire and emergency
exits
-
Safe storage of hazardous chemicals
-
Appropriate health and safety training for staff
-
Employers must keep and update a written Health and Safety Policy, and include
employees, in order to keep everyone updated with regulations
In the context of an office workspace, there are several things that could be done
...
In terms of hazardous chemicals in the office environment, this may include cleaning
equipment such as bleach, which the cleaners may use in the office environment, so the
relevant people must make sure that when these materials and chemicals aren’t being used,
they are locked away in a cupboard, in order to avoid situations, where these chemicals can
harm people
...
Finally, for the Health and Safety Policy, managers must make sure it is updated, and that
people are able to read this, and sign it, to ensure they know the contents and are constantly
updated with changes in both the company rules and government regulations
...
The Act outlines what employers are required to do to manage health and safety
...
Risk assessment should be straightforward and easily accessible in the workplace
...
Firstly, the manager of the business, must make sure their employees are regularly updated,
so they should have meetings with the entire workforce, so update them on procedures, and
give them methods to implement the ideas
...
Finally, as stated, owners of the building should ask the business managers to collaborate
on one set procedure to health and safety, so that they all match up, so therefore everyone
has the same level of organisation relating to fire exit strategies, so therefore this movement
is as efficient as possible
...
For example, in high risk situations, where there may be strict rules and regulations, these
may still be some hazards, and some may occur, so this is why the Personal Protective
Equipment at Work Regulation has been put in place
...
With this the employees must be trained to use
safety equipment, and have the necessary knowledge to be able to detect faults which may
impact them
...
Firstly, the managers must make sure that they order the relevant equipment for new
employees, as for measurements they should ask for these when they hire the employee, so
the safety equipment is suited to them
...
In terms of training, managers should delegate to their employees, to ensure that key
employees teach others on how to use safety equipment effectively, whilst also putting
people in charge, to look out for people who aren’t using safety equipment, so therefore they
can make sure that everyone in this workplace is working safely, in order to protect
themselves
...
Electrical equipment under the regulations includes anything used, intended to be used or
installed for use, to generate, provide, transmit, transform, rectify, convert, conduct,
distribute, control, store, measure or use electrical energy
...
For general safety, they would need to make sure their equipment is working properly and
perhaps wear gloves, in case of an active current, so therefore they may consider this in
their approach to facing their job
...
However, in terms of work space access, they must make sure exits are clear, and that they
have space to move and function in case of emergency, and also so they have the room to
do their job effectively
...
