Right wing conservatives and left wing labour politicians have very differing views when
regarding the view that formal discipline and structure is required for the education system
to be successful
...

Sociologists such as Dewey believe schools should have free thinking tasks and that there
should be more emphasis on emotion and physical education as this will allow further
freedom and expression when in school
...
This means education would not have streaming which is similar to the
left wing idea that everyone should be equal and receive the same education rather than
being pushed to their highest ability
...
It
is also suggested that there should be more time spent on typing, woodwork and foreign
languages
...
This is because functionalists such as parsons suggests that school is a microcosm
(miniature world) of the outside work place and by there being no structure in schools
pupils would them suffer in work places and work work would become less efficient
...

One sociologist idea is Thatcher’s, this suggests power needs to be with the teacher in the
classroom and that the teacher should be respected by the pupils and seen as the authority
figure
...
This
would make it easier to monitor and grade pupils to allow more academically able to
students to be pushed further
...
School would also not be fun and
therefore this would mean there is no social solidarity formed
...
If this did not happen skills from the
hidden curriculum would not be met
...

By increasing exams and student monitoring it would also increase the frequency of the
interactionist idea
...
This leads to a negative attitude and the
student ends up performing badly as they have not been motivated and also has never been
challenged
...

To conclude I feel the best type of education is a mix between both left and right wing ideas,
this is because there has to be a mix of freedom and expression but also grading and
structure
...
Enjoyment in a subject often leads to better grades and this will improve the
student-teacher relationship
