Bohmen’s Public Deliberation
Only things that ought to be convincing are the reasons offered by or to fellow citizens who also freely
exercise their deliberative capacity
Freedom and Equality are the primary test of public reason and private reasons violates the norms by
excluding citizens and restrict audiences of their communication
...

When initiated in problematic situations, deliberation assumes that social life is ongoing and sometimes
fragile
Joint activity within public sphere is dialogical and not merely discourse

Objective of Public deliberation
To solve a problem together with others who have distinct perspectives and interests
Note: Process MUST begin with a shared definition of the problem

Discourse and Dialogue
Discourse employs specific regulative standards of justification and they are typically structured towards
on sort of claim or another
Dialogue is the mere give and take of reasons as it doesn’t aim to produce well-justified claims
Dialogue aims to produce claims that are wide enough in scope and sufficiently justified to be
accountable to an indefinite public of fellow citizens
In dialogue, there is moment
Dialogue is NOT constraint in the same way as discourse as there is an exchange of reasons back and
forth, and sometimes, these reasons contrast each other
*Discourse and dialogue have features in common; Justification and each form takes up reasons
