In the last, the focus is either on the exchange or transaction
between the leader and others, or on the impact the leader has on individuals or an
organization which inspires change or a difference of some sort, a transformation
...
• Transformational leaders display four primary behavioural characteristics:
idealised influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and
individualised consideration

...
DEFINING ETHOS
•
Original definitions of ethos can be traced back to writings of Greek
philosopher, Aristotle, who identified three types of persuasive appeals:
Logos
Pathos
Ethos
Logos - an appeal based on the logic of an argument
Pathos - an appeal based on the use of emotions
Ethos – an appeal based on the perceived character of sender of the message:
Is the person trustworthy, confident, believable, knowledgeable, and a man or
woman of integrity?
• If the audience does not believe the speaker or writer, logic or emotion will
have little persuasive force
...
‖
• This implies that orator must make argument of his speech demonstrative and
worthy of belief and also his character must look right and he must put
hearers in correct frame of mind
...
CONNECTING ETHOS TO AUDIENCE MOTIVATION
•
•
Importance of understanding audience cannot be overemphasised
Audience’s receptivity to leader, their ethos and message can assist or be a
barrier to how they receive the message intended
What makes an audience attend to a message?
Understanding what motivates others to listen and to act
Delivering a meaningful message that they have an interest in
Knowing how to encourage the audience to trust and believe the message
Maker sure the audience has a stake in the subject
Power
Five sources of power to persuade others to attend to a message (French & Raven)
Hocker and Wilmot added the power of information and connections through
interpersonal relationships – they argue that power exists in all social interactions,
with communication functioning to influence others, often through the power that one
person has over others
Trust
Five characteristics of people that others trust, four moral values and one
behavioural:
Integrity – the reputation for honesty and truthfulness on part of the trusted
individual
Competence – the technical knowledge and interpersonal skill needed to perform
the job
Consistency – reliability, predictability, and good judgement in handling situations
Loyalty – benevolence, or the willingness to protect, support and encourage others
Openness – mental accessibility, or the willingness to share ideas and information
freely with others
CONNECTING ETHOS TO ETHICS
•
•
•
•
•
•
Some of the outward manifestations of a positive ethos can be controlled or
developed, but more difficult for an individual to change or for an audience to
determine the true character of the communicator
We judge our leaders by the ethos they project: their outward manifestation in
their dress, behaviour, charismatic appeal, knowledge, and expertise; their
inner character; and their communication actions
Do they speak and write clearly, confidently, and correctly?
Are they good listeners, attending to their own nonverbal signals and those of
others?
Do they seem sincere in their connections to others?
Do they show emotional intelligence and an understanding of and
appreciation for cultural diversity?
BEING AN ETHICAL LEADER
•
•
Important for any leader to look critically at the motivation and meaning
behind his or her words and actions
