Rider  Injuries  Not  related  To  Fall’s

It  is  essential  when  meeting  any  rider  coming  to  me  for  the  first  time  be  it  as  a  group  or  one  to  one
that  I  carry  out  a  risk  assessment
...
 People  often  say  to  be
more  aware  of  risk  of  injury  to  children  but  it  is  no  difference  really  to  when  we  are  getting  older  and
our  bodies  have  suffered  wear  and  tear  and  indeed  injuries  not  related  to  horse  riding
...

BHS  RIDER  REGISTRATION  FORM  (HAND  OUTS)
Risk  assessment  form
Hazard

Hazard  Details

Who  is  at  risk

Risk  Level

Remarks
this  rider

Riding  lesson
...

medium,

has  ???

acceptable,

previous  injury
...

I  will  use  an  example  here  to  show  how  I  would  manage  it
...

The  injury  is  to  her  left  knee
...
 –  includes  all  horse
activities
Collecting  a  horse  from  or  returning  it  to  a  field  ……………
...
heavy  or  difficult  to  carry  or  trip  over  trailing  reins
Tacking  up  ………………………………  reaching  up
...

Having  an  eye  to  what  mood  she  is  in  as  to  whether  we  can  lesson  jumping  or  a  blast  on  the  beach
…………
...

Now  regarding  Gail  I  have  to  set  realistic  goals  bearing  in  mind  the  knee  injury  compensation  must
be  made  but  not  too  much
...

As  with  any  rider  before  I  let  them  onto  a  horse  I  check  that  they  have  good  stirrups  and  that  the
leathers  are  at  the  right  length  for  them  (absolutely  essential  for  Gail)
...
Back  protectors  and  /  or  air
vests  (with  in  date  and  tested  canisters)  for  lessons  and  hi  viz  gear  for  hacking
...

What  does  she  want  to  achieve  she  wants  to  jump  but  we  do  discuss  that  show  jumping  or  cross
country  would  simply  be  pushing  the  pre  existing  knee  injury  too  far  !
So  going  back  to  the  risk  assessment
Hazard

Hazard  Details

Jumping  lesson
...

Acceptable
...

I  can  confirm  Gail  is

currently  pain  free

and  receiving  no
treatment
...

Finally  after  the  lesson  we  would  ensure  that  getting  off  the  horse  is  done  safely  and  that  she  and
horse  cool  down  properly
