“Mamet aligns himself against Reganism and hegemonic masculinity”
In light of this comment, how far and in what way do you agree with this view?
In agreement with this comment, the Mametian method of writing illustrates an alignment
against Reganism and hegemonic masculinity in Glengarry Glen Ross
...
Reganism was a political perspective in the United States of Ronald Reagan who was in
admistration in America in the 1980’s this perpective incorparated hegemonic masculinity is a
perspective that looks at dominant social position of men, and the subordinate social position
of women
...
In the years seperating the stage and screen versions of Glengarry Glen Ross, the American
religious climate changed dramatically
...
Mamet’s
utilization of the character Blake through postmodern satire1 in the 1992 film adaptaion in
Jared Champion’s opinion “ is to connect the similarities between Christian fundementalism
and hegemonic masculinity”
...
In order for
Mamet to show his alignment against Reaganism the adaptation becomes a legalistic Christian
unique narrative of history
...
Patriarchy calls for men to meet behavioral prescriptions of hegemonic masculinity and by
doing so deviating from these norms threaten to feminize the individual, the position of the
salesman who were deviating from the norm when Blake came on a “mission of mercy” were
the ones who were at the bottom of the “board”
...
As the alpha male Jesus he gives the salesman a new system of salvation as he continues he
creates a rigid system of business similar to fundelmentalism
...
While there wasn’t a perfect gender equality in America there was considerable deal
of intergration within the work force – just not the Rio Ranchos Estates work force in 1992
...
This is illustated in Glengarry Glen Ross by
demonstatrating how easily men are bullied by the organisation and how the sales men are
always reinforcing their sexuality and masculinity, before women’s rights movement it was easy
for masculine characteristics to be identified (leadership, education and breadwinner of the
family)
...
Blake, Roma, Wliiamson and even Levene are characters used by Mamet to reinforces this
idea of hegemonic and organizational masculity

salesmen masculinity but also a role model to people outside the organization, he cultivates a
business relationship with James Lingk through discussion of masculine traits: frequent sexual
encounters women “you fuck little girls so be it… the great fucks you may have had (24)”
...
Lingks character and his relationship with his wife could reflect the pain of Mamet’s
parents divorce in the eyes of some critics, this reflected in much of his work, in dealing with
conflicts between men and women and difficults in male/female relationships
...
Levene
goes on to say if “if you don’t have balls” to do the job then “you’re a secetary” which is a job
traditionally held by women
...
The major theme of Glengarry Glen Ross is business and by extension, masculinity as Mamet
says “this play is about a society based on business- a society with only one bottom line: how
much money can you make”
...
Williamson is weighing giving him a chance of making a “close” to how much
money he can make
...
This
displays Mamet alignment against hegemonic masculinity as Williamson is looking at how
much of a man Levene is and whether he is truly a “closer”
...
Levene too is
reinforcing his dominance by using homophobic language when refering to the leads he closed
(note that any form of failure emasculates the sales men and is a threat to their sexuality)
