Cellular Respiration 
 
6O2 + C6H12O6 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP 

 
 
Cellular respiration has three stages: 
● Glycolysis ​
­ glucose is broken down into pyruvic acid and ATP in two phases 





 
Citric acid cycle​
 ­ oxygen is consumed, carbon dioxide and water are produced as 
waste products, and ADP is converted into energy­rich ATP 

 
Oxidative phosphorylation​
 ­ the metabolic pathway in which the mitochondria in 
cells use their structure, enzymes, and energy released by the oxidation of 
nutrients to reform ATP
