Brain­ organ that weighs 3 pounds 
● Gray matter­ areas of the CNS with high concentrations of cell bodies; outer surface of 
cerebrum (cerebral cortex) 
● White matter­ areas of the CNS with mostly myelinated axons; inner part of the cerebrum 
● Glial cells­cells in the brain that nourish and protect neurons 
Brain Stem­ hind brain 

● Medulla­ where spinal cord meets the skull; controls heartbeat and breathing (involuntary 
actions) 
● Pons­ above the medulla that also controls involuntary actions 
● Reticular formation­ bundle of nerves that runs through the brainstem; controls arousal, 
modulates pain, filters irrelevant background information from the senses 
● Thalamus­ pair of egg­shaped organs above the brainstem; receives information from the 
senses (EXCEPT FOR SMELL) and relays it to the rest of the brain 
● Cerebellum­ in the rear of the head, behind the brainstem; controls balance and 
coordination 
Mid Brain­ Limbic System 
● Amygdala­ two almond shaped structures; influences fear and agression (also in monkeys 
and cats) 
● Hypothalamus­ below the thalamus; regulates hunger, thirst, body temperatre, sex, fight 
or flight, triggers the pituitary gland­ reward center 
● Hippocampus­ behind the amygdala; memory 
Fore brain­ Frontal Lobes­ Cortex 
● Prefrontal Lobe­ very front; judgement and rationality; doesn’t fully develop until the age 
of 24 
● Frontal Lobe­ located in the forehead region

● Association areas­ judgement, planning , processing new memories 
● Motor Cortex­ left heminsphere controls the right side of the body
