Hitler wanted to take Stalingrad away from the Russians because it was a major
industrial city and it would help secure the capture of the Caucasus region which supplied oil to

oil, he also told them not to retreat which lead to a bloody battle

-failed surprise attack in the dark thanks to a chance encounter with a German convoy
-went through with it anyway and lost maybe 60 or so percent of their soldiers
-largely considered a failure

Why:
-to find out if a sea attack was possible
-it is also thought that Churchill set up the attack to prove to the Russians that a push was
impossible at the time (basically, he may have known the entire time it would fail)
