Chapter 9 Part 2 Notes

1
...
Diencephalon  Located between cerebral hemispheres and above the
midbrain, and contains four main parts

1
...
Hypothalamus  Maintains homeostasis by serving as a link
between nervous and endocrine system and by regulating the
following activities:
a
...
Body temperature
c
...
Body weight and controls hunger
e
...
Productions of neurosecretory substances that stimulate
the pituitary gland to release various hormones
g
...
Limbic System  Involved in emotional experience and expression

Modifies the way a person acts by producing such feelings
as fear, anger, pleasure, and sorrow
 Guides behavior to increase survival

4
...
Midbrain  Located between the diencephalon and pons

1
...
Contains nerve fibers that serve as motor pathway for between
cerebrum and lower parts of nervous system

C
...
Dorsal portion consists of longitudinal nerve fibers that relay
impulses to and from medulla oblongata and cerebrum
2
...
Medulla Oblongata  Enlarged continuation of spinal cord extending from
the pons to foramen magnum
1
...
Nuclei within MO function as control centers for the following
activities
a
...
Vasomotor Center  Controls constriction and dilation of
blood vessels which in turn controls blood pressure
c
...
Other nuclei within MO function as center for reflexes
associated with coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and
vomiting
E
...
Signals the cerebral cortex with sensory impulses activating it into
a state of wakefulness
2
...
Sleep results from decreased activity in reticular formation
4
...
Cerebellum  A large mass of tissue located below the occipital lobes of the cerebrum
and behind the medulla oblongata and pons

Two Hemispheres

1
...

3
...

Connected by veins
Separated by layer of dura mater
Covered by thin layer of gray matter called cerebellar cortex
Consists of three pairs of nerve tracts called cerebellar peduncles

a
...
Middle Peduncles  Transmits signals from the cerebral cortex to
the cerebellum concerning desired position of the above parts
c
...
Cerebrocerebellum  Receives signals from cerebrum
2
...
Spinocerebellum  Receives electrical signals from the spinal cord

Surface of cerebellum is shaped by thin folds called folia
It coordinates motor activity, posture, and balance, and helps us store information
about motor skills
Damage to the cerebellum may cause tremors, inaccurate movements of
voluntary muscle, loss of muscle tone, a distorted walk, and/or loss of equilibrium
