Summary of Macbeth
Act One:
Scene One;
• Come in at the end of the witches meeting
• The witches are arranging their next meeting before their “familiar
spirits” (devils in animal shapes) call them away into the “fog and filthy
air”
Scene Two;
• Learn about the tough battles and the rebels
• Macbeth and Banquo are introduced as two brave men who win the
victory for Scotland
• King Duncan rewards Macbeth by giving him the title ‘Thane of Cawdor’
Scene Three;
• Macbeth and Banquo meet the witches who have been waiting for them
• Banquo is almost amused by the witches – “Your beards forbid me to
interpret / That you are so”
• Macbeth is stunned to silence by the prophecies
Scene Four;
• Duncan hears of the death of the treacherous Thane of Cawdor
• King Duncan then names Malcom as his successor
• Macbeth recognises that this is an obstacle standing between him and
the crown
Scene Five;
• Lady Macbeth enters reading a letter from Macbeth informing her of
what has just happened
• Lady Macbeth knows she will have to urge her husband on to become
King
• She calls on evil spirits to help her
• She takes control and Macbeth seems glad of it
Scene Six;
• Lady Macbeth appears overly kind towards King Duncan
• Get a sense of how appreciated Macbeth is – “We love him highly”
(Duncan)
Scene Seven;
• Macbeth starts thinking about murdering the King
• However, we witness the battle he has within himself
• He informs his wife, “We will proceed no further in this business”
• Lady Macbeth is furious and calls him a coward, encouraging him that
they will not fail
• Macbeth then agrees to kill the King
Act Two:
Scene One;
• Banquo appears restless – “Hold, take my sword”
• Macbeth replies to Banquo in short responses which shows he is under
stress
• He then creates a dagger from his imagination – “Is this a dagger which I
see before me, The handle toward my hand?”
• Macbeth then goes on to murder the King
Scene Two;
• Lady Macbeth has been drinking to calm her nerves
• When Macbeth returns his hands are covered in blood
• Lady Macbeth greets him with pride – “My husband”
• Macbeth realises what a terrible crime he has committed
• Lady Macbeth takes control again – “A little water clears us of the deed”
Scene Three;
• Tension lifts slightly as a porter wakes drunk
• Lennox saying, “The night has been unruly” reflects the Elizabethan
belief that disorder in human affairs was reflected by disorder in the
world of nature
• Chaos breaks out at the mention of the Kings death
• Macduff grows suspicious towards Macbeth
• Lady Macbeth faints in order to take away suspicion from her husband
Scene four;
