The  Company  of  Wolves  
 
The  introduction  Summary:    
 
•   Story  starts  with  how  werewolves  have  done  harm  to  local  villages  and  
families    
•   The  story  of  the  hunter  who  trapped  a  wolf  by  using  a  duck  as  bait,  cut  
off  all  his  paws,  and  when  the  wolf  is  dead  a  man  now  lay  at  the  hunter’s  
feet  
•   A  witch  turned  her  wedding  into  wolves  because  the  groom  settled  on  
another  girl    
•   A  young  woman  married  a  man  and  he  disappeared  the  night  of  her  
wedding  
•   The  woman  would  wait  for  her  husband  to  return  but  only  heard  the  
howling  of  wolves    
•   She  married,  had  children  and  a  year  later  her  first  husband  returns,  
when  he  sees  second  husband  he  becomes  angry  and  bites  the  child’s  
foot  off  
•   The  second  husband  chops  the  wolf  up  until  he  dies;  also  turns  into  a  
man,  the  woman  is  so  distraught  her  second  husband  beats  her    
•   Talks  about  different  beliefs  about  what  makes  a  wolf    
 
The  main  story  Summary:    
 
•   Introduction  of  a  little  girl  who  is  going  to  deliver  a  basket  of  gifts  to  her  
old  dying  Grandma  on  Christmas  Eve,  taking  a  knife  with  her  for  
protection  
•   On  the  way  she  meets  a  strange  man,  although  she  was  suspicious  at  
first,  “Soon  they  were  laughing  and  joking  like  old  friends
...
 He  bets  her  
that  he  will  get  there  before  her  and  asks  for  a  kiss  if  he  wins    
•   The  man  (a  werewolf)  arrives  first  and  pretends  to  be  the  girl  to  get  in

 She  starts  starts  to  take  her  
clothes  off  and  “freely  gave  the  kiss  she  owed  him”

•   Isolation  –  Girl  is  alone  traveling  through  the  woods;  Granny  is  alone  at  
home  leaving  her  vulnerable
