Anatomy  




Definition  –  to  cut  apart  (Greek);  similar  to  dissection  (Latin)  
Microscopic  –  study  of  structures  that  cannot  be  seen  with  the  unaided  eye  
Macroscopic  or  Gross  –  study  of  structures  that  can  be  seen  with  the  unaided  eye  
o Regional  –  typical  of  graduate  programs,  more  relevant  to  many  clinical  situations  and  a  
logical  approach  to  dissection  
o Systemic  –  emphasizes  commonalities  throughout  an  anatomical  or  physiological  
system;  relates  well  to  physiology;  approach  for  this  class  *Ex  most  veins  have  valves  
§ Tissues,  Integument  (skin),  Skeletal  
§ Skeletal  Muscles  
§ Nervous  
§ Visceral  systems  (endo,  cardiovascular,  urinary,  reproductive

)  
o Three  primary  planes  
§ Sagittal  –  divides  into  right  and  left  portions  (down  through  middle,  vertically),  
often  midsagittal  which  divides  into  equal  right  and  left  portions,  important  for  
viewing  singular  structures  along  the  longitudinal  axis  such  as  brain,  spinal  cord  
and  many  structures  of  the  head,  neck,  thorax,  abdomen  and  pelvis
