Finding Myself

Have you any idea what it’s like to be invisible? Not in the sense you’re ignored or unnoticed
- I mean your body is 100% transparent
...
I hadn’t always been
like this; like all of you reading this I once had a visible, warm body
...
I had lost myself
...
I had been left alone and I was lost
...
Not to just live passively with this burning in my chest
...
It was misty and I couldn’t see what the reflection was
...
Or a woman
...

“Mom
...
Her eyes which were closed shoot open staring
straight into mine
...

“You wish to be seen
...

“Yes but how can I?” I ask, slowly being filled with the hope that I might be able to finally
answer my greatest query
...
Find who you are - who you really are inside and you shall be seen by all
...

“Find yourself
...

“But how?!” I yell
...
” She says slowly before fading until there is nothing left on the surface of the
mirror
...

I wake up sweating and with a lurch in my heart
...
“You must find yourself to see
yourself
...
Like me, my room was inconsequential in the grand scheme of
our house
...
No colours
...
Maybe if I was to change that, make my room a shrine to what I desired… maybe I’d

discover myself
...
I threw the paint on the walls and was delighted at its gorgeous
colour and beautiful shine
...
So I
submerged my hands in the can of paint
...

I was filled with an overwhelming urge to see what the rest of my body looked like - I had
not seen it in so long
...
I
collapsed exhausted in the middle of my floor, laid back and admired my human form
...

I pulled my purple body from my room and trudged into the shower
...
Never
had I wanted my body more than I did right then
...
Who you really are inside”
...

As I stood in front of the mirror drying myself and looking at only the reflection of the
bathroom behind me, I closed my eyes
...
I am invisible
...
I will be found again someday
...
And I won’t give up till I do
...
I do not quit when it gets hard
...
Because
that is who I am!” I say to myself
...
Because that is who I am! I looked at the mirror and found a set of deep
blue eyes staring back at me
...
Her
chestnut-coloured hair shining with dripping water and with a freckled nose and rosy
cheeks
...
I started looking down at myself
...
Then I started laughing – uncontrollably, joyfully laughing
...
” I said to myself
giggling
