Introduction
From Wednesday 30th September until Friday 5th February I attended St Margaret’s Church
of England High School, Liverpool, for a total of 72 days as part of my professional
development

Throughout
my placement I have also been able to implement a variety of teaching styles and initiate
behaviour strategies that coincide with meeting certain standards

Through weekly
meetings with departmental staff and reviews with subject mentor I have been able to identify
my strengths and weaknesses which allows me to reflect on my performance and act upon
advice and guidance provided

I also came across a variety of difficulties due to the lack of my subject
knowledge in certain areas for example not being able to provide an accurate answer for a
GCSE theory lesson or demonstrating improper technique during cricket lessons

What I found from lessons
that didn’t particularly go to plan was that the teaching strategies used was ineffective, for
example, during a year 9 cricket lesson I used a command and practise approach for a topic
that I wasn’t confident with but the level of pupil’s was quite high that they got bored and
required a more challenging level

Whilst at St Margaret’s I used a variety of methods to assess pupil’s attainment and learning,
as highlighted by Kyriacou (2007: 107-108)

activity was carried out over a 6/7 week period and each pupil was then assessed individually
on their performance levels to show how much progression has been made and award them

After marking their work I was able to record a grade for
future reference and provide some written feedback to the pupils in the hope that they would
benefit and understand the topic better

indicates they are not progressing as good as their peers can become disheartened

This included a section on the schools behavioural policy and the steps they take to
maintain discipline and classroom management

implemented the system on various occasions when a pupil was not listening or kept going
‘off-task’

If
pupils persist to interrupt a lesson they are given a detention and are told that if they still
continue to cause trouble they will be sent to a referral room where they stay until they are fit
to return to class and have met with Head of Year

When I asked the pupil why he
was not listening and preferred to talk to others, he replied that he was sorry but found the
task slightly beyond his limitations
...
This supports Rogers (2006: 84) who states that one reason for pupil’s misbehaviour
is due to their inability to do the work

Conclusion
Overall, reflecting on my time spent at St Margaret’s I was fortunate enough to develop as a
teacher in all three areas but also have ample room to continue my professional development
...
In preparation for phase 3 I have set numerous targets for myself in order to achieve QTS and
develop my existing attributes for example continue expanding my knowledge and
understanding of PE and the many topics within it and also be able to manage the learning of
all individuals to suit the level of their learning
...
This is not a detriment for me
but a challenge I welcome
