The Yellow wallpaper is the most popular of her works

post natal depression and being restricted from writing from her

Reforming marriage and the family

1884 she marries Charles Walter Stetson reported against her better
judgment

1892 the yellow wallpaper – based on her own experiences
Responded to her situation in a radical way by filing for divorce in
1894, at the time it caused a massive outcry
After she was divorced she sent her daughter to live with Stetson and
his second wife – criticized for abandoning her family
If you were divorced it was put in the newspaper
Reason for divorce was the fault of CPG, and willful neglect, at the
time it was always the fault of the women

When the press reported on her marriage, they highlight that in the
marriage to Stetson she became close friends with her neighbors and
their daughter got close to Stetson (imply a relationship but do not
frown on it) instead draw attention on Gilman for being selfish for
wanting to pressure an intellectual life

She felt a restriction on her life because she had a child to care for, a
man in her position would not have this to deal with, she was the one
responsible for her daughter
Many women in the 18th and 19th century drank vinegar (gentile
society) – if you take it large amounts it can kill you, in small regular
amounts it can alter your constitution, used vinegar to temper
themselves, to keep them edgy and nervous
