Music Revision - Notes (DER KRANKE MOND)

Written by Schoenberg (1874 - 1951)
Expressionist style, chromatic melody, harmony, dissonant harmony, atonality, unusual
techniques, wide range, large melodic leaps, extreme dynamics
19th century - heightened expression of emotions

Instrumentation
– The whole work requires 5 instrumentalists - 8 instruments involved
– Flute - low tessitura, occasional high passages (top E# bar 8), trill in bar 5 (only ornament)
– Singer - alto range, Sprechgesang (spoken song), rhythms are accurate but pitches can
change, large range (E below middle C - E a 10th above)
Text

– syllabic, rare melisma

Texture
– occasional monophonic writing for flute 8-11
– two part writing - free counterpoint - no obvious relationship between the parts
– Thin texture - allows vocalist words to be heard - allows lower register of flute to be heard
Structure
– Three verses in poem - poem begins and ends with same lines
– Through composed - no repetition of sections
– Two solo flute sections - separate verses - 8-11 and 19-20
– Phrase lengths are varied
Tonality
– It’s atonal
– All 12 notes of the octave are in the first 3 bars - the reciter has 11 of them
Harmony
– No chords possible - only two melodic lines - two note intervals
– Many intervals are discordant
– The first 6 bars contain every interval from a minor 2nd to an octave
Melody
– conjunct movement in the first vocal phrase - wide angular leaps - diminished octave augmented 9th (13) - augmented 11th (9)
– repeated notes - low repeated C#’s - bars 15-16 - repeated vocal phrase at the end (use of
augmentation)
– descending sequence - 22-23 - flute part
Rhythm
– notation of 6/4 - scarcely noticeable - extremely slow dotted minim beat
– syncopation is present - but little effect - precise performance markings (tenuto and
staccato)
– rests are occasionally used, occasional triplets (14),
– Rhythmic augmentation at the end
