Dear Aunt Clara,
I am writing to you as I feel I need to get something off my chest which has troubled
me greatly and has occupied my thoughts both day and night
...
My
feelings right now are all over the place
...
My fear of how I shall
die has been on my mind since I have arrived at San Quentin
...
Words cannot describe my feelings
and I am unable to vent them physically
...
My true values, beliefs and the
meaning of my life is now being fully examined and fears of the after life forces me to
question how I have lived my life
...
I only hope this has given me enough guidance and courage to face my executioners with
a free spirit and a clear conscience
...
There is a small window here, I can see
the sun beginning to set and I see a glorious mix of colours in the sky
...
I have had a lot of time to think and reflect about my actions involving Lennie’s death
...
I truly am the loneliest man in the world
...
Even now as I write this, I can see the horror in your eyes and feel the sense of shame
that you would feel towards me
...
I know that you, like others, have formed a judgement about my
involvement in his death, but I so need your good opinion
...
You know as a child I have always felt a great sense of responsibility towards Lennie
...
He was a gentle giant that
needed to be shown and also protected from the ways of the world
...
Such a responsibility
forced to mature quickly
...
I have always wanted to protect him from
any hurt and pain
...
I knew that if was caught he would not
understand the cruelty of this world and I wanted to protect him from it
...
I
wanted to protect him from that
...
I can comfort myself and hopefully you as well that Lennie died painlessly and peacefully with a
smile on his face
...
His was instantaneous, whilst mine
is now painfully long and agonising
...
If you could only see the hungry look of revenge in the faces of the guys chasing Lennie, like a pack
of tigers chasing a weak injured animal hungry for the kill
...
If he were to be locked up, he would not
know what to do or understand why he was there
...
You did not see the anger in their eyes, an anger beyond any reasoning, an
anger that could not be controlled
...
Even if I let him go, he would starve; I
had to do something
...
He was a burden but one
that became part of who I am
...
What is done is
done and I now have to be held responsible for it
...
I know that I will be meeting both you and Lennie soon
...
The sun has set and I am now surrounded by darkness
...
Your loving nephew,
George
