Poem Analysis of “Metaphors” by Sylvia Plath
Metaphors are used to explore and widen ideas and forces that are behind our rational
way of thinking
...
In the poem Metaphors, Sylvia Plath used imagery to describe
how she perceives pregnancy through the use of metaphors, challenging her readers to
uncover the meaning of her work, which is about human creation, and an objective not to
scare pregnant women but to prepare them for the big day
...
” The words “I’m” and “riddle” are connected to each
other
...
This will
cause the readers to think that this whole work of art is a riddle
...
Also,
the number nine is seen all throughout her poem
...
There are a total of nine lines in this poem
...
Pregnancy takes up nine months before conception
...
“An elephant, a ponderous house
...
Elephants are said to have very long reproduction
periods
...
The ponderous house also means largeness; a
large house for someone to think and ponder in
...
Biblically speaking, there
is a connotation of the human body as a house of the soul
...
” Like the elephant, the melon represents her
feeling of roundness and largeness
...
Although, these strings are not much of a support since
they are not exactly stable
...
It could also mean that the child has taken over
her life because she is attached to it through the strings
...
The red fruit can be associated with the melon since it is red inside, and this can be
associated with the baby for it is red upon its conception
...
People kill just to get it, a small thing yet so
valuable
...
Fruits are pulled off from trees; Ivory is
pulled from elephants
...
Fine timbers are what make houses feel complete due to its design and value
...
With all these
objects used to describe the baby, we can say that she considers it to be precious
...
” We can imagine the rising of the yeast as it
overflows the top of the baking pan
...
Bread could be referred as to the bread of life, which is the child about to be
born
...
“Money’s new-minted in this fat purse
...
Coins are usually placed in a purse and people have a
tendency of keeping their shiny coins
...
Like
pickpockets, a fat purse is a desired object for them
...
The money
represents the baby since it becomes more valuable and delicate than its bearer
...
“I’m a mean, a stage, a cow in calf
...
She has lesser value than what she carries
...
It is like she is the stage while the child is the star of the play
...
There is irony that it seems like the cow is in the calf rather than the
opposite because of their said values
...
“I’ve eaten a bag of green apples
...
Green apples were used instead of any other kind of apple because green apples
are not ripe, therefore, are sour
...
She then regrets eating the apples just as she regrets getting pregnant
...
The apples were thought to
be something that would make their lives better; little did they know what kind of evil it held
...
“Boarded the train there’s no getting off
...
Apparently, pregnancy is
something that is not a reversible process that you can just escape from
...
Just like her,
the train is due and nothing can stop it now until it reaches its destination, which is the
delivery of the baby
...
Now she feels she
is being stripped off her freewill since she has no other choice but to submit herself into this
life and all its processes
...
Pregnancy has a lot of downsides but there are a
few good sides to it, like the baby itself, a gift from the Giver of Life
...
Plath is successful
with this objective for she really drew images for us to get the picture
...
The title
Metaphors fits, the entire poem is a metaphor
