Biology - Diversity Test Review
Unit 1 - Classify Life’s Diversity
Unit 2 - Kingdoms and Domains

2

Unit 3 - Biodiversity

2

Unit 4 - Viruses

3

Unit 5 - Bacteria and Archaea

3

Unit 6 - Prokaryotic vs
...
biological - behaviour and ability
1
...
morphological - appearance
1
...
phylogenetic - evolution
- use for extinct species, don't have all history
Taxnomy - classification of organisms
Genes species - 2 part naming system
1
...
Physiological - functions and protein make up
3
...
DNA replicates with
host DNA but can lie dormant until ‘trigger’ causes it to go through lyric cycle

Vaccines

- partial viruses are injected to introduce body’s immune system to the virus
- body can recognize and fight off and infection
- AIDS, Rabies, Measles

Unit 5 - Bacteria and Archaea
Main Characteristics of prokaryotes

- single- celled
- single chromosome
3

- no true nucleus or membrane
- very small
- reproduce asexually through binary fission
Archaea

Bacteria

Morphology

plates, rectangular rods

pyramids, cubes, star sections

Nutrition

same are methanogenic

some are photosynthetic

Habitats

most extermophiles, live in
extreme habitats

most merophiles, live in
moderate enviroments

reproduction:
Binary Fission
cell copies itself
Cell elongates and separates from its copy
build wall, septum
cells split to create 2 new cells, genetically identical

Conjugation
2 cells connect by protein bridge
exchange copy of some/all DNA
produce new genetic combo
undergoes binary fission to produce more cells
Plasmids - small loops of DNA separate from main chromosome, contain genes, transferred
through conjugation
Transformation - bacteria pick up stay DNA from surroundings
Transduction - viruses that infect bacteria transmit genetic material
Aggregation: group of different things

Endospores
in threatening environments some bacteria form hard wall structure to protect and store genetic
material
makes bacteria resident in high temp, freezing, drying out, toxic chemicals
when condition improves they grow back into active bacteria

Classifying
- size and shape, nutrition, movement, genetic composition, respiration and gram staining
gram positive - accept the stain, common
gram negative - don't accept stain, less common

Unit 6 - Prokaryotic vs
...
asexual - lots of nutrients and water, Budding(smaller cell develops on parent and pinches
off), Fragmentation (new organisms produced from separated piece of mycelium)
