Nurse:
● shows extreme closeness towards Juliet when she casually talks
about when she was younger  and lost her virginity ‘now by my
maidenhead at twelve years old’
● Shakespeare presents the Nurse as someone who is closer to
Juliet than her mother is
...
 What is your will?’
● Lady Capulet is presented as distant and there seems to be a lack
of love and connection between Lady Capulet and Juliet as the
Nurse seems to have a more motherly relationship with Juliet
● At the beginning of the play in act 1 scene 3, Juliet is presented as
respectful and obedient to her mother ‘no more will I endart mine
eye’ which creates surprise throughout the play when Juliet meets
Romeo and rebels and disobeys her mother
● throughout the play, there is an increasing separation from Juliet
and her mother and the rest of her family including the Nurse

progressively as Juliet has developed a stronger relationship with
Romeo which she distanced herself from her father
● Shakespeare uses dramatic irony to present the relationship
between Juliet and Capulet, in order to develop tension within the
audience
● Tension builds up to the climax in Act 3 Scene 5 is a turning point
of their relationship, Shakespeare uses the expletives in ‘Hang
thee, young baggage’ and ‘disobedient wretch’ to show how angry
Capulet is with Juliet
● Compare to Act 1 Scene 2 ‘An she agreed within her scope of
choice, lies my consent and fair according voice
