"Examine how Shakespeare presents the way Juliet loses her innocence and matures during
Romeo and Juliet"
Section 1:
'During Act 1 Scene 5 Juliet seems to be a mature and intelligent person when she first meets
Romeo'
"For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss
...

[Maturity shows because she is not diving in to kiss Romeo
...
]

Mature - Juliet is finding other ways around kissing Romeo and suggesting that holding
hands is like a kiss
...
[ Dealing with this situation like
an adult would
...
For example Romeo's first quote had
rhyming couplets which rhymed on every other line for the whole time he was speaking "
Hand-Stand, This-Kiss
...

Innocent - Juliet seems innocent here as she is backing away from kissing Romeo, this may
infer that Juliet is scared to have her first kiss and is not ready
...
[Portrays her innocence ]

"Saints do not move, though grant for prayers' sake
...
[ Mature as she is not giving Romeo the impression
that she is easy and desperate
...
[ Juliet uses tactics which make it seem like she is innocent, Juliet says
she will not move which is giving Romeo the impression that he should kiss her
...
]
Mature - Juliet is not perceiving herself as forward, Romeo is, therefore Juliet is taking a
step back and wanting Romeo to make the first move
...
However Juliet is able to influence Romeo to kiss her without it seeming like she
is
...

[ Innocent as she may be nervous about the kiss
...
[ Juliet may also be seen as
innocent here as she is giving Romeo the power/authority to kiss her, Juliet is the more
submissive one whereas Romeo is more dominant in means of action, however Juliet is
more dominant with words and is able to manipulate through verbal communication
...
" [Act 1 Scene 5] [Line 108]

Mature - Juliet is being smart and manipulating Romeo to kiss her again, through acting
innocent by using 'Sins' as a way to get another kiss
...
]
Mature - Juliet can be seen as mature as she still seems to be playing hard to get and not
rushing into a relationship with him
...
[ Mature as she is willing to kiss him again
without having to overthink about it like she had done previously
...

Innocent - Juliet can be seen as innocent here as she masks wanting Romeo to kiss her
again by using 'sins' as an excuse/alternative to get another kiss
...
]

"You kiss by th' book
...
[ Mature as she does not try to mask up how
she feels with other words such as to do with saints ]

Mature - Juliet notifies Romeo and tells him that kisses like he has studied how
...
]

Innocent - Juliet may be seen as innocent and naïve here as she is judging Romeo's kissing
saying he is a good kisser however this is her first kiss and she may be just excited after it
happened
...

Section 2:
'In Act 2 Scene 2 Juliet's maturity seems to increase when she confesses her love for Romeo and
proves it by giving Romeo her hand in marriage"
"Deny thy father and refuse thy name
...

Mature - Juliet at this point is acting mature because she is finally starting to not care
about what is going on with the two families, Her opinions not going to change on Romeo
just because of his family name
...

Innocent - Juliet seems innocent here as she seems oblivious to how big the feud is
between the two families and she is not realising that
...

"Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I’ll no longer be a Capulet
...

Mature - Juliet is mature here as she is willing to sacrifice everything she has, this shows
her maturity and the devotion she feels for Romeo
...

Innocent - Juliet is innocent here as she is making a huge sacrifice and this can be seen as
innocent as she is not fully aware of how much she would be sacrificing by giving up her
family
...

"What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part

Jada Lee 10I
Belonging to a man
...
Montague is only seen a threat because of who
the family it belongs is and the feud between the two families
...
[ Juliet is being mature here as she is seeing past Montague]
Mature - Juliet is mature here as she is finally realising that just because Romeo is a part of
the Montague family does not mean he has anything to do with the grudge, Montague is
nothing to do with Romeo, its just a name he is tied down to
...

Innocent - Juliet can be seen as innocent here because she still has that sense of hope that
Romeo and her can live happily ever after despite the grudge going on around them
...

"O, swear not by the moon, th' inconstant moon,
That monthly changes in her circle orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable
...

Mature - Juliet shows her intelligence through seeing past Romeo and confronting him
that the moon always changes and shifts and that she does not want Romeo to be
inconsistent with her
...

"It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden" [Act 2 Scene 2] [Line 119]

Mature - Juliet is being mature about this situation and handling it like an adult by taking a
step back to think about what she wants
...

Juliet is saying its too much to exchange promises tonight since it all happened to quick
...

"If that thy bent of love be honourable,
Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow" [Act 2 Scene 2] [Line 144]

Mature - Juliet is mature here as she is allowing herself time to think before getting
married
...
Juliet is finally mature here as she is starting
to think about what she wants for once
...

Innocent - Juliet's innocence can be seen here as towards the start of the play she was very
much against the idea of being married and a happy bride and now all of a sudden she is
getting married
...

Innocent - Juliet is also innocent here because when she agrees to get married with Romeo
it could just show that all the pressure of getting married from her mother and the nurse is
piling on top of her and she might have just agreed to get married to sort of be obedient to
her mother, this is what shows her innocence
...

Jada Lee 10I
Section 3:
'During Act 3 Scene 5 When Juliet goes against her family, refusing to marry Paris and seeks the
friars help, Juliet seems to be slightly mature in some areas however we can still see her innocence
in some parts
...

I wonder at this haste" [Act 3 Scene 5] [Line 117-118]

Mature - Juliet is mature here as she is finally confronting her mum and telling her that no
matter what Paris will not make her a happy bride, She is finally telling her mother how
she really feels without locking it up inside
...

Mature - Juliet is mature in this seen as she is staying loyal to Romeo even after he killed
Tybalt and she is still loyal to Romeo even if he is banned in Verona
...

Innocent - Juliet can be seen as innocent here as even though its going to be impossible for
her and Romeo to live in harmony, especially after his ban, Juliet is staying faithful to him
...

"I will not marry yet
...
We can see before she was very obedient to her mothers wishes and orders but
now Juliet is rebelling which shows her maturing as she is starting to become independent
...
The use of 'I Swear' is even more powerful when she is using it as a
promise to her mother that she will marry Romeo
...

Innocent - Juliet can be seen as innocent in this scene as she is making big decisions for
herself at such a young age
...

Innocent - Juliet is innocent in this scene as she is causing even bigger problems, and she
does not acknowledge it
...
If only Juliet just followed what her parents said then maybe Romeo and Juliet
would be alive at the end
...

Jada Lee 10I
"O sweet my mother, cast me not away!" [Act 3 Scene 5] [Line 199]

Innocent - Juliet is innocent here because she is very much childlike in this quote, before
she was all like 'I will not marry/
...

Innocent - Juliet is innocent here as she is reminding us that she is still young and that she
needs her mothers support and that without them she would not be able to cope, She is
innocent here as she shows us that she is still very much reliable on her mother even if she
does make some big decisions which will effect her life, she still needs her mother
...

Or, if you do not, make the bridal bed
In that dim monument where Tybalt lies
...

Mature - Juliet is mature here as this is the first time she has directly told her mother to
stop the marriage and this is the first time she has actually used a threat ' Or if you do not'
Mature - Juliet is mature here as she is still sticking by Romeo's side and even referring
that she will kill herself if them do not delay the marriage, she also refers to her dead
cousin in this scene which has more of an effect
...

Innocent - Juliet is innocent in this scene as she is making another big decision about her
killing herself, people may view this as immature and irresponsible as she does not realise
yet again how big of a decision she is making
...
Some may view this as immature as she is actually threatening her own
mother who is only trying to do what is best for her
...
"
"What if this mixture do not work at all?
Shall I be married then tomorrow morning?" [Act 4 Scene 3] [Line 21-22]

Innocent - Juliet is innocent here because she is having doubts on the friar and wondering
if he gave her something which would get her hope up and then for the potion to not
work
...

Mature - Juliet is thinking maturely, this is not an innocent and immature thing to think of,
Juliet has the right to have doubts about the potion and wonder if it will work or not
...

"What if it be a poison, which the friar
Subtly hath ministered to have me dead," [Act 4 Scene 3] [Line 25-26]

Innocent - Juliet is innocent here as she is having doubts about the Friar which is that the
Friar gave her real poison for her to be dead, so that he does not have to be unholy and
marry her to Paris
...

Mature - Juliet is mature here as she is thinking of all the stuff that could go wrong and all
the risks with taking a potion she just received
...

Innocent - Juliet is yet again innocent here as she is having more doubts about the Friar
but this time she is worried that the potion will wake her up before the time Romeo
comes
...
This shows her maturity as she is able to think ahead and make
a plan if things turn out wrong
...

Innocent - Juliet is innocent here as we can see the innocence she always has had, Juliet is
still that little naïve girl inside and she might not be ready to make decisions such as this
...
' Juliet is still very much oblivious to the effect it has on others
...

"And madly play with my forefather’s joints,
And pluck the mangled Tybalt from his shroud,
And, in this rage, with some great kinsman’s bone,
As with a club, dash out my desperate brains?" [Act 4 Scene 3] [Line 52-55]

Innocent - Juliet's innocence and immature can be see by the way she is thinking in this
quote, for example where she says ' With some great kinsman's bone, As with a club, dash
out my desperate brains?' This is very immature of her to say this, about her going mad
and smashing her head in with bones of dead people
...

Mature - Juliet is mature to think that she will go mad from all this hectic chaos of her
waking up in the tomb and everything however the way she rephrased it is very innocent
and immature for the fact that she will go grab a dead persons bones and smash her brain
in
...
"
"O churl, drunk all, and left no friendly drop
To help me after? I will kiss thy lips
...

Innocent - Juliet is innocent here as she is willing to sacrifice her own life because she feels
that she is so empty and lonely without Romeo
...

Innocent - Juliet is innocent here as she refers to poison like it’s a good thing, that will help
her escape all the troubles she will have to face once people find out she is really alive
...

Mature - Juliet acts mature here as she is thinking ahead of time and she wants to commit
suicide not only for Romeo but also for herself
...

"Yea, noise? Then I’ll be brief
...

Juliet is innocent here because she will do anything to find a way to kill herself
...

Innocent - Juliet is innocent here as she feels like she needs to kill herself to be happy and
reunite with Romeo, Its almost like she cannot accept the fact that Romeo is dead and that
she needs to move on with her life, Juliet feels the need to kill herself to prove her endless
love for Romeo
...
There rust and let me die
...

Innocent - Juliet's innocent is portrayed here when she takes her life not only for a boy
who is already dead but to escape all the drama that would take place if she were to be
still alive
...

Mature - Juliet is mature here because she proves her love for Romeo, that she would die
for him (which is exactly what she done) and She shows maturity because throughout the
end of the play she stood up for what she believed in and she stuck with her decision the
whole time
...
