The Tempest

Act 1 Scene 1

Stage direction ‘Thunder and lightning’
- Captures the audiences attention
...

- Possessive pronoun ‘your’ you instead of thou – surprising as it is custom to use
‘thou’ when talking to the more socially inferior
...
Symbolises
class boundaries that were being challenged at the time (theme in the play)
- Boatswain replies “do you not hear him? You mar our labour
...
Declarity of “you mar our labour, keep your
cabins” – Boatswains attempt to keep control as he tries to save the ship – he
correctly uses the formal ‘you’- addressing the higher status of Antonio but we
assume it’s said through clenched teeth because he was hindered from doing his job
because of the storm we therefore see the traditional master/ servant roles do not
apply
...
Shakespeare emphasis this
using the snappy fast paced dialogue with quick exchanges of conversation – creates
a fast feeling of panic
- Sebastian - “A pox o’ your throat, you bowling, blasphemous in charitable dog” – use
of cursive – drawn out by adjectives that follows the rule of 3 emphasising that
Sebastian has attempted to gain control of the situation through his insults
...

In addition, his language implies he’s lacking control and panicking
