Street in Dresden (1908) by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) Visual Analysis

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) was a German expressionist and print makers, he
most credited as one of the founders of the group of artists known as Die Brücke
...
He had volunteered in
World War I but had suffered a breakdown due to the trauma of it all and was
discharged
...

Kirchner was one of the leading figures within the Die Brücke group
...
It’s founding members were Fritz Bleyl(1880-1966), Erich
Heckel (1883-1970), and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff(1884-1976) as well a later members
like Emil Nolde(1867-1956) and Otto Mueller(1874-1930)
...
However, the difference between Die Brücke and the
Fauves in this instance is that Die Brücke wanted to bridge the gap between past art
and future art
...

One of the major paintings at this time from Die Brücke is Kirchner’s Street in
Dresden (1905)
...
The
foreground shows the start or the end of the brightly coloured pink street as well as
the bottom of the dresses the women are wearing
...
There is also a young girl figured in the centre of the figure, it looks
as though she’s holding someone’s hand but the figure is not showing
...

The application of paint is loosely handled and there are no finer details drawn onto
the figures
...
Line is used to create shadows and draw the figures
...

Colour is stylised and unnatural as the brightest colour is a large stretch of pin which
depicts the street
...
Light is so stylised and the overall effect of the painting
is unnerving and uneasy to look at for too long
