Unit 26: Managing Business Information

P2: Explain the sources of information needed in a selected organisation
Tesco may use different types of sources in order to make changes to how they operate in
terms of the customer, for example, to make customer service better
...
So for example,
if they sell both PES and FIFA, and one sells far more than the other, they would then have
to withdraw one from store sales, as it wouldn’t be worth stocking it, so therefore as a result
of looking at this source of information, a wholesale change would be made
...

Secondly, marketing information is required in Tesco, as they would need to promote any
products or promotions that would be happening at that moment in time, to ensure that the
product or promotion gets the traction it needs, so therefore sharing the marketing
information is vital to ensure that Tesco continues with their sales, to make sure there isn’t a
downturn at any point
...

Purchasing information is also important to Tesco, as they need to monitor what their
customers are buying, as they need to ensure that they are constantly recommending and
stocking the products that the customer would be interested in
...
Also, if a customer is buying a specific
product, then they would continue to stock and recommend this product, however, if they
see that loyal customers aren’t buying a product, and this is a pattern throughout all the
customers, then they may withdraw the product, as they would see it’s not worth stocking
and recommending
...
So for example, if you use
your clubcard when you go into a Tesco petrol station, then you may then get an email from
Tesco Insurance asking if you want car insurance, so therefore, Tesco as an organisation
can then retain you as a customer
...
There could be many uses for
the census information, as firstly, depending on the population on the town, they may decide
to vary the size of the stores, so for example, if there is a town of 100 people, Tesco may
decide to set up a Tesco Metro, as they will still feel there is an opportunity for the brand to
grow and to create jobs in a small area, however it won’t be worth creating a larger store, so
this size will be necessary and vice versa
...

Moreover, in terms of the government, Tesco would have to keep track of certain laws and
regulations of what they can trade, as Tesco needs to stay lawful and meet certain
regulations, so for example, if the legal age for alcohol changes, Tesco would need to meet
these changes, so therefore they stay lawful in trade to ensure they don’t exceed the laws
and therefore don’t have to pay certain fines in the future
...

In terms of staff, Tesco needs to review current performance of all their employees in their
payroll
...
If there were any internal disputes, HR would have to manage
this and they would offer solutions to the employees involved
...
Payroll is another source of information which
would be monitored, so the level of pay would vary from employee to employee on certain
factors, such as role and hours completed
...

The HR team in Tesco would need to source different information relating to their employees
such as timetables and holidays, as the HR team would need to ensure that the employees

don’t go ver the 48 hours work a week mark, as this is the legal limit, so therefore the HR
team needs to ensure that there is enough employees on the workforce to fill in for when
other employees clock off or have days off, and ensure there are a consistent number of
employees for the store, in order to help the customers
...

In terms of products, Tesco would need to store information on previous products they have
sold, and use this to build an idea of what they may sell in the future, so for example, if they
sold a certain brand of water in the past, and it didn’t sell well at all, a Tesco manager may
come to the decision to not sell that brand again, as they looked through the previous sales
history of that product, and saw that it wasn’t worth selling, as the general public isn’t
interested in that product, so therefore this source of information would be used to ensure
that relevant products are stocked to keep interest within Tesco
...
and therefore using this data, Tesco would be able to make decisions based on their
rivals, so as stated above, they may avoid certain areas if they see Sainsbury's in the area,
as it may not be worth it due to that store being established within that area
...

Finally, Tesco may carry out their own research in the form of surveys, so that they can gain
more information on where they need to improve, so they can gain a better relationship with
their customers, so therefore they can then gain a better experience
...
